Massman Companies Groundbreaking Highlights Company Growth and Embarks on Sustainability-Focused Expansion
On Thursday, May 11th, Massman Companies hosted their new campus groundbreaking ceremony with bulldozers revving in true Massman fashion, showcasing the team’s enthusiasm and energy. This date marked a significant moment in Massman’s history as construction begins now on a 73,000-square-foot campus located on acres of land in Alexandria, Minnesota. They will use the new site for machine design, assembly, machine testing, and customer demonstrations. The company will continue its successful operations in Villard, Minnesota where Massman Automation started, over 40 years ago. The goal of the project is to complete the exterior of the building by winter 2023 and be move-in ready in early spring 2024.
The Massman Companies, Inc. is a strategic portfolio of industry-leading packaging technology companies. Massman Companies includes; Massman Automation, EDL Packaging, DTM Packaging, Ideal Pase, and New England Machinery. The growth at each location drives the need for additional space. Locally, the Massman Automation division in Villard has been added onto 9 times over the years with additional rented spaces both in Glenwood, Minnesota, and most recently in the Turning Leaf Business Complex in Alexandria, Minnesota. The new expansion site’s plan is for two additional stages of development for a total of 225,000 square feet.
Jeffrey Hohn, President, and CEO of The Massman Companies stated that the plans for the site would be designed for employee wellbeing, the customer experience, and to optimize sustainability. “The new site will be developed to protect wetlands and wooded areas and include an initiative to add native plants and forestry to provide a habitat for deer, turkey, birds, and animals. Our goal is to build a campus where the team is proud to come work at, embraces their passion for the outdoors, and represents a modern manufacturing environment.” He went on to say, “We aspire to make the new building not only for our team, but also for the community by hosting educational, charitable, and community events with a focus on giving back to the organizations, clubs, and causes that our team is passionate about supporting.”
Every aspect of the building’s design reflects the team’s inspiration and vision. The team-designed building will have many unique features that set it apart from other traditional manufacturing facilities. These include collaborative workspaces, glass windows between the office and manufacturing spaces that promote a sense of community and openness, 18-foot windows in both the office and shop floor providing lots of natural light, and outdoor patio spaces for the team to use for meetings, events, and lunches.

The groundbreaking ceremony was unlike others, gold shovels were replaced with yellow bulldozers. As Massman says often, they use the best machine for the job, automation, and efficiency. The company is excited about the opportunity to expand its operations into Alexandria and appreciates the strong community support they have experienced through this new expansion project thus far.
